We are Maine Cottage
Maine Cottage is the original home to spirited, colorful furniture in styles perfect for coastal living. We just celebrated 20 years and look forward to the future with great optimism.

Our furniture is "real" and will last a lifetime. There aren't many things you can say that about today. Free of frills and unfettered by trend, Maine Cottage is simple, timeless furniture forms combined with beautiful colors and fabrics. You may also be comforted to know that each piece is benchmade and/or hand-finished here in the USA with the highest standards of traditional, environmentally-minded methods. If you ever tire of it, your children will happily take it off your hands.

What we Do
Every piece of Maine Cottage furniture - sofa, bed, dresser, and wicker chair
is made to your order and custom-finished in the zesty Maine Cottage fabric and/or colors of your choice. We have over 200 fabrics and 40 color choices, so there is flexibility and opportunity to have fun and be expressive with your home.

Better yet, choosing Maine Cottage does not require a designer. Our fabrics and colors, natural wood and vintage-style rattan all work together with our graceful furniture styles making it easy to put together rooms or fill a whole home with Maine Cottage.

We're happy you discovered Maine Cottage. We know you will delight in us as we make buying designer-quality furniture easy and fun. We love what we do and you will too.

How we do it
We make sure you have an extraordinary Maine Cottage service experience. We provide friendly, timely communications, thoughtful design solutions, fabric swatches and color chips to ponder. We know your time is precious and we'll assist you in your decision-making process. We'll help you every step of the way - as much or little as you prefer - to a professional "White Glove" delivery in your home. You'll be very happy and satisfied with the results. You'll wonder why you waited so long.

What you can Do
Peruse our website and try our "virtual" coloring tools to see furniture in every fabric and color. Request a Colorbook. Call us to share your home ideas. Plan a trip to visit one of our three company stores in Maine, South Carolina and Florida. If you cannot make the trip, then feel free to send your house plans or blue prints. We make it easy to create versatile, comfortable spaces for everyday living, entertaining friends and hosting family.

Even in Blue, Maine Cottage is Green
Maine Cottage furniture is made and/or finished here in the USA. With 20 years of thoughtful, conservationist business practices behind us, you can feel good about Maine Cottage. We've always said "Even in blue, our furniture is green." We do it because it feels right to us. View our Green Statement as a PDF.

A Brief Maine Cottage History
How did it all begin? And what did it take for us to build a home furnishings business from scratch? View a 1996 Down East magazine article as a PDF.

It took vision: provided for us by artist and designer Carol Bass when she saw photo stylists painting 'found' cottage furniture to add color to presentations in home decorating magazines.

It also required a plan: developed and executed by our founder and president Peter Bass who saw parallels in the footwear and apparel business that presaged opportunities for marketers of colorful, casual home furnishings to a new generation of consumers who grew up with color magazines, TV and movies.

We opened for business 20 years ago here in Yarmouth, Maine with these basic ingredients plus samples of eleven furniture designs prototyped by a carpenter named ‘Cookie’, five bold colors from Carol’s paint palette, and an offer from a friend to design the first brochure for free.

We've come a long way. The vision, the plan, some good fortune and the enthusiastic energy and dedication of Maine Cottage people has resulted in a flourishing company with three company stores, seventy retailers nationwide, fifteen hundred design professional customers, and delighted customers across the country.

Community
Community is very important to us. Maine Cottage principally directs its charitable giving and leadership support to the Greater Portland chapter of Habitat for Humanity. To find out how you can become involved with this important organization, please visit www.habitat.org.

We also support local charitable organizations and schools that are important to the family and friends of our employees.

Behind the Scenes
We regularly accept generous compliments for our photography and print catalogs. Most people assume we use an agency to produce the photography on our website and in our beautiful catalogs. The truth is, we do it all ourselves in-house with a fun-loving crew of talented Maine Cottage people, our long-time photo stylist and artist Laurie Hadlock and the expertise of local commercial photographer, Dennis Welsh.

Maine Cottage room setting photography takes place in and around the Greater Portland, Maine area in "borrowed" private homes of friends and friends-of-friends and sometimes right here in our Yarmouth company store. Furnishings are made to order and styled by room type with complementary accessories. There are many challenges to working in this way rather than the more typical studio photography, and the results speak for themselves. The photography is as fresh and inviting as our Maine Cottage furnishings and style.
